Puppy Preschool

In Puppy Preschool, puppies learn to socialize off-leash with other puppies and safe adult dogs in a controlled environment. Early socialization helps puppies learn appropriate interactions, build confidence, and become more comfortable around other dogs as they grow.

We disinfect the facility with a veterinary-grade parvocide the evening before Puppy Preschool. Preschool puppies are the first dogs on the training floor that day. Please carry your puppy into the facility and set them down once you reach the training floor.

Puppies also learn that being around another dog doesn't always mean they get to play. On-leash work helps teach calm behavior, appropriate greetings, and how to focus on their handler around other dogs.

PUPPY SOCIALIZATION & TRAINING

04

Why the first six months matter most

The first six months are an important time for your puppy to learn about the world around them. Early training and socialization can help build confidence, teach appropriate interactions with other dogs and people, and establish good habits before unwanted behaviors have a chance to become routine.

At Ryker, puppy socialization is about more than just letting puppies play. Our classes give puppies opportunities to interact with other dogs, experience new people and situations, practice settling around distractions, and learn basic obedience in a safe, controlled environment.
Every puppy is different, which is why we focus on helping each puppy build positive experiences and learn appropriate social skills at their own pace. Starting these skills early gives you and your puppy a strong foundation to continue building on as they enter adolescence.

Questions

How old does my puppy need to be?

Puppy Preschool is for puppies 2–4 months old who have not yet completed their parvo vaccine series. Puppy Kindergarten is for puppies 4–6 months old who have completed their parvo vaccine series.

Does my puppy need to be fully vaccinated?

Not for Puppy Preschool. We disinfect the facility with a veterinary-grade parvocide the evening before class, and Preschool puppies are the first dogs on the training floor that day. We ask that puppies be carried into the facility until they reach the training floor.

Puppy Kindergarten requires the parvo vaccine series to be completed.

Can more than one person attend class?

Yes. Up to two people may attend per puppy due to the size of our facility. Each puppy must have their own handler during class.

Can littermates attend together?

Yes. Each puppy must be registered separately and have their own handler. During class, littermates will be placed on opposite sides of the training floor to encourage independence and help each puppy focus on their handler.

What happens if my puppy ages out before finishing all six classes?

If your puppy ages out of Preschool before completing all six classes, remaining classes can roll over into Puppy Kindergarten as long as your puppy is registered in advance. The remaining balance may also be applied toward Puppy Day Training or another training program.

What should I bring to class?

Bring a regular leash (no retractable leashes), collar or harness, small treats, and a blanket, rug, or dog bed for your puppy.

What if my puppy is shy or nervous?

That's okay! Puppy class can be especially helpful for puppies who are unsure of new dogs, people, or environments. We don't force interactions. Puppies are given opportunities to observe, build confidence, and participate at a pace that's appropriate for them.

My puppy is older than 6 months. Is it too late?

Not at all! Puppies over 6 months have aged out of our Puppy Classes, but we have other training options available based on their age and training needs, including Day Training, Private Lessons, and Board & Train.

Do I need to attend six weeks in a row?

No. Your puppy has eight weeks to complete their six classes, giving you some flexibility if you need to miss a Sunday.

What does a puppy class look like?

Each class is approximately one hour long and is divided into two parts. Puppies spend about 30 minutes participating in supervised socialization, including off-leash play and opportunities to practice appropriate interactions with other puppies and safe adult dogs.

The remaining 30 minutes is structured training, where we work on basic obedience, handling, confidence building, settling around distractions, and other age-appropriate skills. We also use this time to discuss common puppy behaviors and answer training questions.
